Rob O’Regan just posted an overview in CSO Online’s “Art of the Hack”, writing of the “3 ways to turn cybersecurity practices into competitive advantage.”
O’Regan interviewed cybersecurity experts and practitioners to build this piece, asking them how a business can turn its cybersecurity practices into competitive advantage. Their responses were sorted into the three ways to turn cybersecurity practices into competitive advantage, including:
- Embed security into business strategy & operations
“Organizations can incorporate cybersecurity competitive differentiation into the value chain that contributes to competitive advantage,” said Steven Fox (@securelexicon), senior cybersecurity officer with the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
- Reinforce the advantage you already have
“Hackers go for the easier target,” said Ed Featherston (@efeatherston), director and senior enterprise architect at Collaborative Consulting. “If your measures make it harder, then they will find someone else to go after that has not implemented comparable measures (e.g. a competitor perhaps).”
- Become a security champion
“Some of the greatest benefits to a firm can come from being known to be a helpful, community-focused champion of best practices in cybersecurity,” said Bob Gourley (@BobGourley). “By being a model to suppliers, vendors, employees and customers and taking digital risk reduction seriously, firms can help others become more secure and will be seen as the kind of respectful partner that others want to do business with. Customers want to buy from good firms and this is definitely a way to be good in the modern age.”
